Federal Funding for Public Media Is at Risk

May 2, 2025

Dear Friend,

I don’t often write posts like this, but today is different.

As you may have heard, President Trump has signed an executive order that could eliminate all federal funding for PBS, NPR, and public media across the nation. If this happens, Valley PBS could lose nearly 20% of its budget, funds that are crucial for serving our community.

I want to be clear: we pride ourselves on being locally supported. Over 80% of our funding comes from individuals right here in the Central Valley. But that remaining 20% from the federal government isn’t something we can simply replace. It’s the critical margin that helps keep the lights on and the cameras rolling. It enables us to provide trusted news, emergency updates, educational children’s programs, and the national PBS shows we all know and love.

We’ve faced many challenges together, especially this past year when the fire on Bear Mountain temporarily took us off the air. Thanks to your support, we are rebuilding and getting closer to recovery. And now we face yet another challenge.

Here’s the truth: if we’re going to weather this storm, we need the support and awareness of everyone in our community.

If you’d like to raise your voice in support of public media, you can do so here:

We’re not backed by billionaires; we’re backed by you—teachers, parents, retirees, and neighbors throughout the Central Valley. I believe in this station because I believe in this community. I know we’ll get through this, just as we always have.

Thank you for standing with us.
