This virtual awards ceremony will honor the impact Valley businesses, non-profits and individuals have had on their neighbors. There will be 6 award winners. Scroll down to see all the nominees and tune-in to see who will win – available streaming the same day.

Do you know someone who has the neighborly spirits of Mr. Rogers? The following persons, businesses and non-profit organizations have been nominated because they have made a positive impact in their communities and embody the positive qualities of Mr. Rogers.
When the pandemic hit last year, Bitwise placed the safety of its employees first. It was one of the first companies to set up remote work. As Bitwise saw how the community’s most vulnerable people would be affected by the pandemic, it met the moment by creating a program to deliver groceries and meals to those who needed it. To date, that program, Take Care, has helped deliver over 200,000 meals to thousands of families across the Central Valley.

Read MorePatrick Balakian has been a staple of the central valley for years. Fresno State Alumnus and director of bands at both Selma High and Clovis High, Balakian sawt to teach even more.
Read MoreRusso’s Books and the Russo family changed the Kern County and Bakersfield community over the years with their business as a bookstore. Their website highlights the literacy events in the area. They participate in One Book/One Bakersfield/One Kern County annual reads each year. They support the Battle of the Books by providing immediate access to all the titles in their showroom and acting as the bookseller at physical events.

Project Loreal is a non profit organization that offers comfort, hope and healing thru their custom made memory boxes to mothers and families that have dealt with the tragedy loss of a baby. The subject is still taboo and many keep their loss to themselves.

Read MoreIf you wake up hungry in Madera, there is a place to go for a meal. It is open every morning from 8:00 am to 9:30 am. No one is turned away, and no questions are asked. Holy Family Table is a soup kitchen in Madera that has been serving a daily morning meal to the needy since 2005.

Read MoreDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, when we needed these folks the most, they have stayed open (virtually) to provide presentations, trainings, advocacy and support for all those individuals with mental illness, their family, friends, mental health professionals and the general public.
Read MoreIn the 2020 year the all volunteer organization provided food to 11,310 families. The community has been changed by the involument of so many caring young adults in the pantry. This involument has revitalized the neighborhood.

Read MoreEmmy deserves to be recognized as an outstanding neighbor because at such a young age she has shown compassion, dedication, generosity, and so much love for her neighbors. “Proud mom” is an understatement. As her parents we obviously believe she is special but to see the immense support, love, and recognition she has received by others is both humbling and inspiring.

On behalf of myself and the entire Rotary Club of Clovis, I nominate Leticia Ramirez for her tireless efforts as a volunteer. Lettie will be Clovis Rotary’s President next year, chosen for her outstanding leadership qualities and because she embodies everything that is good about Rotary. Our motto is “Service Above Self” and one of our core values is volunteer service.

In retirement he has chosen to live a very active life of quiet, effective service, focusing particularly on the needs of young people, immigrants, and the underserved both directly and through projects that affect their lives.

Katherine Jordan has provided superior educational services for over 36 years with the Kern High School District and the Bakersfield City School District. he has served in many capacities including Teacher, Pre-K Site Supervisor, Ethnic Minority Director for B.E.T.A. and Ethnic Minority Director for C.T.A. Sierra Center.

Although he was retiring, he knew that his talents and interests could still be of use in the community, and he responded to an advertisement for employment as an administrative assistant for a local nonprofit specializing in foster care and adoption.

Read MoreWhen I think of Mr. Rogers, I think of someone who is friendly, kindhearted, tidy, full of appreciation for life, and quick to say “hello neighbor”. Mr. Wagner, my neighbor, is all of these things. From the weekly favor of taking out trash and recycling bins for our older neighbors, to the free kite flying lesson he offered my eager six year old on a windy day in our cul-de-sac, he is always looking for ways to lend a helping hand.
Read MoreKatherine “Katie” Verducci is my literal neighbor, but is a good neighbor to every person she meets, whether or not they live in the neighborhood. She is so conscientious and kind, and hosts our neighborhood block party every year, (pre-Covid), and makes sure everyone is welcomed.
Read MoreI am nominating Mike Evaro for the Spirit of Mr. Rogers Neighbor Contest. He is consistently serving others. Some recent examples: in November, he built a wheelchair ramp for a local senior citizen and in December, he installed a refrigerator for a single mother.

Since we can only nominate one, I have to tell you about Rick. Rick Salinas is the “go to” neighbor for any kind of help. When pruning trees or doing home maintenance, he is the first person to offer a needed tool or helping hand, and often has great advice but is never pushy.
Read MoreIrma Olguin Jr. is a Central California native. She comes from a long-line of fieldworkers. In order to achieve her college goals she had to work hard and push herself academically. Irma received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Toledo through a series of serendipitous events.
Read MoreShe has been active for decades in local organizations working for peace and justice for which she has my sincere thanks, but she also raised two good kids and has been a valued neighbor for all of the thirty-five years that we’ve lived next door to her. She has been friendly and welcoming, helpful and supportive, everything one could hope for in a neighborhood stalwart.
Read MoreMy neighbor Chester daily makes trips through the neighborhood picking up trash. Further, he chats with neighbors during his walks and just recently talked with an elderly woman who had no contact in case of emergency. Chester gave her his number and urged her to call him if she needed help. Let’s all be Like Chester.
Read MoreRodney Rodriguez started the Fresno Skateboard Salvage, which is a voluntary program which supplies skateboards and gear to kids around the Central Valley.
Read MoreThere were empty houses being broken into and used as homeless and drug addict residences. Homes and automobiles broken into nightly. Mary envisioned this neighborhood as it once was when she was growing up and decided to do something about it.
Read MoreBefore COVID occurred he contributed his services by doing a mission trip every year to Guatemala, to help those in need. The organization which helped organize the trip is called HELPS international, I had the privilege of joining him on one of those trips in 2017.
Read MoreMy neighbor Nick has lived next door for… fifteen years give or take. He is always friendly to me and everyone he comes in contact with. He tells me to get off his lawn and on my own property but I’m pretty sure he’s just kidding. His personality is in some ways similar to Mr. Rogers. Nick has a relaxed and trusting demeanor and is just a likeable person.
Read MoreMy neighbor lives on the next street and has helped so many people in my neighborhood. I am 81 and can’t get around too well. Our front yard was a mess and we paid someone $1400.00 to take out our lawn and then they were going to charge the same price to put seed down. Daniel happen to come by and said if I buy the seed and manure he would put it in and he did. What a blessing he was. He has helped his neighbors on his street with the same thing.
